Action Against Hunger began operations in Nigeria in 2010 in response to the high rate of chronic malnutrition in Northern Nigeria, focusing on integrated programming. Action Against Hunger currently implements multi-sectoral humanitarian and development interventions in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria, funded by AFD, EU/ECHO, French Government, GAC, SIDA, US Government, and GIZ.

Action Against Hunger Nigeria (ACF Nigeria) Ltd/Gte is currently recruiting a Wash Officer based in Yobe. 
The successful candidate will support the implementation of public health promotion activities and the distribution of non-food items (NFIs) to affected populations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Mission 01: Overall supervision of hygiene Promotion and Non-food items distribution activities following Action Against Hunger local strategy and International Guidelines
 
  • Ensure that a joint multi sectoral rapid needs assessment is carried out, analysis done and hygiene promotion strategy is designed on the basis of the findings;
  • Ensure the implementation of WASH EM approach and collect the relevant data for context specific hygiene promotion interventions
  • Promote the implementation of Baby Wash approach and collect the relevant data to improve context specific Baby Wash hygiene promotion interventions
  • In coordination with the WASH Program Manager, revising and adapting hygiene promotion training and IEC materials in line with the local context (should be drawn up as a communication plan) and in line with target groups to be trained;
  • Ensure that all monitoring mechanisms are in line with the agreed monitoring format;
  • Continually assessing emergency needs, as requested, especially taking in the broader perspective of public health;
  • Plan beneficiary selection and registration, and lead the distribution of NFI kits with the Field Assistant team;
  • Work closely with MEAL team to ensure post distribution monitoring (PDM) is conducted for all nonfood items (NFIs) distributed
  • Ensure that work meets with SPHERE minimum standards;
  • Assist the WASH Program Manager with, and where required participate in, community
  • mobilization;
  • Ensure that all technical work reflects the needs and preferences of different target groups and are devoid of public health hazards.

Mission 02: Train and build the capacity of staffs and partners
 
  • Ensure that the PHP team members are fully aware of the hygiene promotion strategy and all activities are in line with strategy activities.
  • Prepare training tools on relevant technical topics and conduct trainings for both internal staff and external stakeholders 
  • Assist the WASH Program Manager in the development of technical guidelines and tools for hygiene promotion services
  • Conduct WASH FIT assessment for all implementing health facilities
  • Assess areas for improvement and recording lessons learnt for future activities
Mission 3: Coordinate with internal staffs, and local stakeholders to ensure smooth project implementation
  • Working closely with the WASH Program Manager throughout the planning, design and implementation stages of WASH public health promotion activities. 
  • Representing the organization at local level WASH meetings and technical working groups relating to public health promotion and NFI distribution as required by your line manager. 
  • Work closely with Nutrition and health team in integrating activities towards improving service delivery to target population.

Mission 4: Supervise and manage staffs under your responsibility   
  • Providing day-to-day management of staff directly under your responsibility;
  • Setting performance missions with staff under your direct management conducting performance appraisal in line with ACTION AGAINST HUNGER  performance management policies as well as identifying areas where support and capacity building is required;
  • Ensure team coordination and integration with other WASH technical team members.

Additional Responsibilities
  • This job description is not intended to be all inclusive and the employee will also perform other related tasks as required and responsible for reporting and communication of progress and achievement of the specific assigned task
  • Maintenance of high technical standards
  • Conduct all duties in a professional manner following ACF Nigeria mission staff regulations, ACF mandate and charter including promotion of gender equality

Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Public Health, Environmental Health, Hygiene and Sanitation, or another relevant field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in WASH, hygiene promotion, community engagement, and/or capacity-building activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and work flexibly in challenging and changing operational environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Willingness and ability to be based in and travel regularly to remote locations across Northern Nigeria, including areas where services and amenities may be limited.
  • Fluency in English and Hausa is required, with proficiency in Kanuri also required for the role.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and capacity-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with communities and diverse stakeholders in field-based environments.
