Action Against Hunger began operations in Nigeria in 2010 in response to the high rate of chronic malnutrition in Northern Nigeria, focusing on integrated programming.

In 2011, we expanded our work to begin implementing nutrition development projects in Jigawa and in Yobe. Following the crises in Northeast Nigeria, we further expanded our operations to address the Nutrition, Health, Food security and livelihoods, WASH, and shelter needs of conflict-affected communities.

Action Against Hunger Nigeria programme is supported by FCDO, ECHO, GAC, BHA, SDC, UNICEF, EU, AFD, SIDA and GFFO.

Action Against Hunger is currently looking to fill the role of Hygiene Officer, who will be responsible to ensure quality implementation of the Public Health Promotion and Non-Food Items distribution of the WASH project.

Position Details

Reporting to: WASH Programme Manager

Proposed start date: July 2024

Work location: Sokoto, Sokoto State

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the implementation of WASH Emergency approach and collect the relevant data for context specific hygiene promotion interventions;
  • Ensure that a joint multisectoral rapid needs assessment is carried out, analysis done and hygiene promotion strategy is designed on the basis of the findings;
  • Promote the implementation of BabyWash  approach and collect the relevant data to improve context specific BabyWash  hygiene promotion interventions;
  • In coordination with the WASH Program Manager, revising and adapting hygiene promotion training and IEC materials in line with the local context (should be drawn up as a communication plan) and in line with target groups to be trained;
  • Ensure that all monitoring mechanisms are in line with the agreed monitoring format;
  • Continually assessing emergency needs, as requested, especially taking in the broader perspective of public health;
  • Plan beneficiary selection and registration, and lead the distribution of NFI kits with the Field Assistant team;
  • Work closely with MEAL team to ensures post distribution monitoring (PDM) is conducted for all non -food items (NFIs) distributed;
  • Ensure that work meets with SPHERE minimum standards;
  • Assist the WASH Program Manager with, and where required participate in, community mobilisation;
  • Ensure that all technical work reflects the needs and preferences of different target groups and are devoid of public health hazards;
  • Ensure that the PHP team members are fully aware of the hygiene promotion strategy and all activities are in line with strategy activities;
  • Prepare training tools on relevant technical topics and conduct trainings for both internal staff and external stakeholders;
  • Assist the WASH  Program Manager in the development of technical guidelines and tools for hygiene promotion services;
  • Conduct WASH FIT assessment for all implementing health facilities;
  • Assess areas for improvement and recording lessons learnt for future activities;
  • Working closely with the WASH Program Manager throughout the planning, design and implementation stages of WASH public health promotion activities;
  • Representing the organization at local level WASH meetings and technical working groups relating to Public health promotion and NFI distribution as required by your line manager;
  • Work closely with Nutrition and health team in integrating activities towards improving service delivery to target population;
  • Participating in staff’s recruitment in line with agreed organogram structure;
  • Providing day-to-day management of staff directly under your responsibility;
  • Setting performance missions with staff under your direct management conducting performance appraisal in line with ACTION AGAINST HUNGER  performance management policies as well as identifying areas where support and capacity building is required;
  • Ensure team coordination and integration with other WASH technical team members.

Position Requirements:

  • B.sc in public and Environmental Health, Hygiene and Sanitation related field;
  • Must be willing to travel any location within Northern Nigeria;
  • Previous experience in supervising hygiene promotion activities;
  • Capacity to be adaptable and flexible;
  • Two to three years of relevant work experience;
  • Microsoft Office software Skills (Outlook, Excel, Power Point, Word);
  • Willing and able to be based and travel regularly within remote areas, where services are limited;
  • Fluency in English and Hausa language;
  • Experience working in an emergency programme (RRM) will be an added advantage.
